Does a smile make you more attractive? I think so. It really does. People like to be surrounded by others who are positive and make them feel good. Smiling is a great way to do that. It feels good to smile and be smiled at. It also makes you look more approachable and friendly. How significant is that when dating? Very significant actually.
Various studies were done about this very subject. This one was particularly interesting:
Guéguen did a study where an average-looking female went into a bar and made eye contact with a guy sitting alone. In half of the cases she smiled towards him, and in the other half she didn’t (the decision whether to smile or not was random). One hundred men participated in this study. When the woman smiled, the number of men who approached her was 5 times more compared to the men she didn’t smile at (11 vs. 2 men). Even if the men did not approach the woman, the men who got a smile glanced at the woman for 7 seconds as opposed to only 2 seconds when she did not smile at them.
Fascinating! So smiling makes you more attractive and makes others more receptive to you. It adds to what you have to offer. It doesn’t cost you anything and not only makes you feel good it makes the object of your interest feel good too. So why don’t we do it more often?
Other Benefits of Smiling

- it is a sign of happiness
- it makes you approachable
When I used to train call center agents (way back in the day) I used to always tell them to smile on the phone even if they didn’t feel like it or the client couldn’t see them. Why? Because it made them sound friendlier, happier and more helpful. Now, is that such a bad thing? I don’t think so!
When seeking out a mate, smiling is a great way to show interest, along with eye contact as I spoke about in my recent post about the “5 Second Flirt“. Be approachable, there’s nothing wrong with that and it doesn’t take a lot of work. Be the person that people want to be around, not the person people avoid. Plain. Simple.
