Love? Is It Worth The Trouble?

Well, love is a great many things … Plato called it a “serious mental disease” … Shakespeare said that “love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind” … Victor Hugo said “the supreme happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves – say rather, loved in spite of ourselves” … Paulo Coelho wrote that “love is not a habit, a commitment, or a debt. It isn’t what romantic songs tell us it is – love simply is” … but what is love really?  Love is what you make it.  Love is what you want it to be.  It can be great and it can horrible.  Which it is, is up to you.  You think I’m crazy for saying that? Nope … just honest and realistic.  How many times do we get ourselves into these crazy love situations where we end up not only hurt but also alone?

loveLove makes us do stupid things … but is it all worth it?  Does that momentary feeling of euphoria make up for the countless days of hardship and misery? When I think back on all the times I have been in love, I always ended up broken-hearted.  Sometimes I wonder if it was worth the pain I felt.  Isn’t it just easier to be alone? Sometimes I think that yes it is … but I don’t want to be alone.  I like being with someone, I like loving and being loved.  I have so much good to give someone who truly loves me.  For those I love I am truly a giver.  I am supportive, positive, caring, passionate, someone who takes care of the one she loves … I make my man feel like a king, but only if he lets me.  I’ve always got his back – during the good, the bad and the ugly.  But, I cannot do it for those who don’t want it.  Sometimes no matter how much you give if someone doesn’t want your love you can’t force it.  Love knows no boundaries or distances.  It simply is what it is.

I think this sums it up very well: “Love hurts sometimes, but it is worth it. As humans, we crave human touch and love. In fact, babies can die without it. The pain love can sometimes cause is worth it for the experience of being loved and in love. Loving someone sets you up to hurt if you lose them, but if you don’t love for fear of loss, what’s the point of living?” (WikiAnswers)

So is love worth the trouble … I say yes!

  1. Ms. Single Dating Diva,

Nice blog, as always, and I *mostly* agree with you. For people like you and I, who have an endless capacity to love, I think it is worth it. I think some people have a natural tendency to think of others first–and that’s not just with love, it could ve with occupations or hobbies (doctors, philanthropists, humanitarian workers, etc.) There are some people that are just at the their best when they’re being selfless. Love works in a similar way. I’m on my A-Game when I feel confident with a partner.

Others may not be wired for that. I’m starting to learn that some folks need to take care of themselves not only first (which I think applies to everyone) but also THINK about themselves first. These folks might not be the best candidates 🙂

    FWIW.

    • Thanks for the comment … you’re right … there are those that are selfish and those that are selfless. A balance of both is best, but most people lean to one side or the other.

  2. Aww, I’m with you, sister. Love is one of the rare things in life we can’t quantify or define or really figure out the secret to. But we keep trying, because it’s what we all crave. And when that doesn’t work, there’s always Valium. 😉

  3. Life is just sweeter and more beautiful when love is felt in your heart. Your connections with the people around you is deeper/more meaningful, your view of the world is more lovely, and your inner strength becomes Herculean. Even the pain and insanity brought on by love and loves lost make you wiser and more compassionate…so even if you lose, you win. Love is worth it and no matter how hard those with the genuine capacity to love try to avoid it…get snared in its web again and again! Incredible post Diva!

  4. Love is the scariest thing in the world for me right now. I want it, but I’m scared to get it wrong. I know, silly, how can you get it wrong?

Although, when I think back to the times I have truly been in and enjoyed love, it has been amazing, really amazing.

Owl is the romantic in our duo, although I do have it in me. Just need to give it more of a chance I guess.

  5. Whenever I am feeling in a negative place about my relationship, my first thought is always “This would be so much easier if I didn’t love you,” but I try not to say it out loud!
